I am Lisa Wells, your Virtual Assistant Trainer.
If you’ve ever wondered how search engines like Google decide which websites to show on the first page of search results, you’re not alone. Welcome to the world of Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short.
In today’s episode we kick off this series with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Fundamentals: Building the Foundation.
What is SEO?
At its core, SEO is the process of optimizing your website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). The goal is to increase the organic (non-paid) traffic to your website by improving its relevance and authority in the eyes of search engines.
How Do Search Engines Work?
To understand SEO, you need to grasp how search engines work. They follow a three-step process:
- Crawling: Search engines use automated bots (or crawlers) to browse the web and discover web pages.
- Indexing: Once crawled, the search engine stores information about the web pages in an index, like a massive database.
- Ranking: When a user enters a search query, the search engine scans its index to provide the most relevant results, ranked in order of relevance.
SEO vs. SEM
It’s essential to differentiate between SEO and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). While both aim to increase a website’s visibility in search results, SEO focuses on organic, unpaid strategies, while SEM involves paid advertising campaigns like Google Ads.
Keyword Research
Keyword research is a crucial step for a virtual assistant (VA) to ensure that the content they create, whether it’s for your own site or your client’s sites, whether it’s blog posts or website copy, anything you create needs to align with the target audience’s interests and improves the website’s search engine rankings. Here are some examples of keyword research that you might be doing for a client:
Identifying Niche-Relevant Keywords: If a VA is working for a client in the health and wellness niche, they might research keywords like “healthy living tips,” “nutrition advice,” or “fitness routines” to understand the most relevant and frequently searched terms in that field.
Long-Tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords are longer and more specific phrases that often have less competition. For instance, a VA working with a client who offers personalized fitness coaching might research long-tail keywords like “personalized fitness plans for beginners” or “customized workout routines for weight loss.”
Location-Based Keywords: If a VA’s client has a local business, researching location-based keywords is crucial. For example, if the client runs a yoga studio in Raleigh, NC, the VA might research keywords like “best yoga in Raleigh” or “raleigh yoga studios.”
Question-Based Keywords: People often use search engines to ask questions. A VA can research question-based keywords relevant to the client’s industry. For example, if the client is in the technology sector, keywords like “how to troubleshoot a computer issue” or “what is cloud computing” might be relevant.
Keyword Variations: It’s essential to consider keyword variations and synonyms. For instance, if a VA is assisting a client in the real estate industry, they may research variations of “buy a home,” such as “purchase a house,” “acquire real estate,” or “invest in property.”
Seasonal Keywords: Some industries experience seasonal trends. For instance, a VA working with a fashion brand might research keywords related to summer fashion trends or winter clothing.
By conducting thorough keyword research and staying up-to-date with industry trends, a virtual assistant can help their clients create content that attracts the right audience and improves their website’s search engine rankings.

There are two main categories of SEO: On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO.
On-Page SEO: This includes optimizing individual pages on your website. Key elements to focus on include title tags, meta descriptions, image ALT text, content quality, headings, and keyword placement.
Off-Page SEO: Off-Page SEO involves activities that happen outside your website, such as building backlinks (links from other reputable websites to yours), social signals, and online reputation management.
In summary, understanding the fundamentals of SEO is crucial for anyone looking to improve their website’s visibility in search engine results. Today’s lesson covered the basics but we’ll go deeper in the weeks ahead.
